Plymouth Albion 27 Leicester Lions 22

The Lions travelled to Plymouth to face another side who had lost both their opening two games. Having been 27-05 down the Lions rallied to earn a well deserved losing bonus point but it was the Albion who held on to record their first victory of the season.

The home side took the lead through an early penalty which Tom Putt converted, but shortly afterwards the Lions took the lead when Luke Bouchier's shoulder ball sent the impressive fullback George Pearson crashing over (3-5).

The home side had the upper hand in the set piece and their clear size advantage was putting them on the front foot. The young Lions side defended stoutly though and it wasn't until 30 minutes until they were finally broken. The Plymouth maul caused problems for the Lions all afternoon and it was from a dominant drive that Plymouth scrum half Jack Outen sniped and found winger Shea Cornish on the inside to cross unopposed. Putt converted for a 10-5 lead.

Just before half-time Luke Bouchier was sin binned for a deliberate knock-down and shortly after the break the home side took advantage of the extra man and increased their lead from another driving maul, scored by Rhys Williams. Putt converted again (17-5).

The maul continued to be the difference between the sides and as debutant Max Carr was adjudged to have illegally brought down the maul, Albion were awarded a penalty try to move 27-5 ahead.

Although the game appeared to be gone, the Lions came to life in the last quarter, helped by the introduction of some fresh legs. The attacking rugby that the Lions had been playing all afternoon appeared to have taken its toll on the home side and space was opening up all over the park. First to profit was Joe Brock who sliced through on a nice inside line off Luke Bouchier who then converted the score. This was quickly followed by another score when Cam De Beer dived over from close range. Bouchier converting again. (27-19).

The Lions were in complete control of the contest now and had it not been for a try-saving tackle on young debutant winger Rafe Whiteat, on loan from Northampton Saints, the Lions may well have taken the win. The flying winger picked up the ball deep in his own 22 and went on to make a break before beating all the cover before being hauled in to touch agonisingly just short of the line.

Luke Bouchier elected to take a penalty kick 6 minutes before the whistle to bring the Lions within 7 but unfortunately they weren't able to take either of their opportunities to snatch victory at the death.

The Lions return home next week to face Sedgley Park.

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''Pretty similar to last week really. We played all the rugby and made loads of line breaks, but we just didn't complete enough of those opportunities. On the other side of the ball, all it takes is one bit of ill-discipline or an error and you give a big pack the opportunity to drive you over. It's frustrating but there's so many positives so we cant be too down on ourselves. We have to put in a more consistent performance but some elements of our game today were superb and the boys can be really proud of how they came back.''
